The Ann Arbor Township Board recognized the potential adverse impacts related to climate change, such as more intense rain events and increased frequency of high temperatures, and passed a Resolution establishing the Ann Arbor Charter Township Policy to Mitigate Climate Change on June 21, 2021. The Board directed the Township’s Climate Resilience Committee to develop plans and priorities to address climate change and provide recommendations to the Board. In 2022, Washtenaw County adopted Resilient Washtenaw, a County wide plan to reduce carbon emissions from both County operations and county-wide. Over the past year, the Committee has been working with a contractor to develop a Township Climate Action Plan to coordinate with the County’s Plan.

The draft Climate Action Plan describes current and projected impacts due to climate change and presents specific risks and vulnerabilities in the Township. These include population changes and climate migration, infrastructure vulnerability, water availability and impacts on agriculture and natural systems in the Township. The plan also presents adaptation and mitigation actions to address these impacts by describing the types of activities that will be necessary to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction targets Township-wide and from Township operations.

The Township values your input and feedback as we are near completion of the plan.  A public engagement meeting to discuss the plan is scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2023.  This is a hybrid meeting; you can either attend in person at the Township Hall or on Zoom.

The Ann Arbor Township Climate Committee is interested in your thoughts and feedback on the township’s draft climate action plan. The Committee created a survey in which you can provide your thoughts on the climate priorities and projects the township should consider. Please take this survey. It should take 10-15 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous, unless you provide your email address in the final section of the survey indicating that you wish to receive future communications.
