Mineral Mining - new Section 74-592a
On October 21, 2024, the Board of Trustees approved amendments to the Zoning Ordinance in Chapter 74, Section 74-592 “Mineral Mining” repealing Section 74-592 and adopting a new Section 74-592a. The new ordinance section includes requirements for a mineral mining conditional use permit (CUP) application including, for example, a hydrogeological study and work plan, environmental impact analysis and reclamation plan. The CUP standards and review criteria have been updated to include more detailed requirements, limit dewatering and ban offsite discharge of process water. The new ordinance will require annual reports and inspections of mineral mining operations.
The amendment now known as Ord 7-2024 takes effect on November 15, 2024
Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control
On December 16, 2024 the Ann Arbor Charter Township Board of Trustees approved the second reading of ordinance amendments to Chapter 26, Environment, Article VII Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC). The ordinance amendments allow small (less than 1 acre disturbance) projects to follow the Township SESC permitting process and exempt them from requiring a state level permit.
The ordinance, now known as Ord. 8-2024, becomes effective on January 2, 2025.
Code Violations
On February 17, 2025 the Ann Arbor Charter Township Board of Trustees approved the 2nd reading of ordinance amendments to Chapter 1, General Provisions, Sec. 1-7 General Penalty; Continuing Violations. The amendments update the fees for code violations. The ordinance, now known as Ord 1-2025 will be effective March 7, 2025.
Planning Commission Conflict of Interest
On April 21, 2025 the Board of Trustees approved ordinance amendments to Chapter 2, Article VI, Division 1 Planning Commission. The amendments update the Township’s conflict of interest ordinance for the Planning Commission and make it more consistent with state law. The ordinance, now known as Ord 2-2025 will be effective April 24, 2025.
Tree Woodland Preservation
The Ann Arbor Charter Township Board of Trustees met on April 21, 2025 and approved amendments to the Zoning Ordinance in Chapter 74, Section 74-605 Tree and Woodland Preservation Ordinance. The amendments create the following new sections: 74-605 (i) Expiration of approval, 74-605 (j) Extensions, and 74-605 (k) Amendment of Approved Tree/Woodland Removal Permit. The amendments also add an exemption per the Right to Farm Act applies and a time window for tree surveys submitted as part of the site plan process.
The amendment now known as Ord 3-2025 takes effect on May 8, 2025
